Bugs, bugs, bugs
This week in nursery, the children have continued learning about minibeasts. We've been exploring different types of insects, going on bug hunts in the outdoor area, and building minibeast houses using natural materials. The children showed a lot of curiosity and care during these activities.
We’ve also been learning about life cycles, with a special focus on caterpillars. We now have our own caterpillars in nursery, and the children have been observing them closely, noticing how they grow and change each day. We’ve talked about what will happen next in their life cycle and are excited to watch them transform into butterflies.
In art, we looked at Henri Matisse’s collage The Snail and used it as inspiration to create our own insect collage pictures. The children used a range of materials and shapes to design their own imaginative minibeasts.
In maths, we explored the concept of capacity, using vocabulary like full, empty, nearly full, and nearly empty through practical activities with water and containers. We've also been learning about sequencing—putting familiar routines in order (like getting dressed and brushing teeth) and sequencing the nursery rhyme Incy Wincy Spider.
Finally, we spent time in our garden planting carrot seeds, learning about what plants need to grow, and making predictions about what we might see over the next few weeks.
It’s been a busy week full of hands-on learning and lots of observation and discussion.
